Outlaws & Lawmen Jail Museum, Cripple Creek Colorado.

Directions to site:   126 West. Bennett Ave., Cripple Creek, Colorado

History of the site:  Formerly the Teller County Jail, this building now serves as a museum dedicated to the outlaws and lawmen of the Gold Rush era.   The building was constructed during 1901, and opened for business in August of that same year.  Besides holding local burglars, robbers, highway men and other minor criminals, it was also used to hold individuals accused of more serious crimes who where awaiting the outcome of their trial at the nearby District Courthouse.  The jail even held a member of the "Wild Bunch" gang, Robert Curry (aka Bob Lee) for a time after Cripple Creek lawmen found him in town.  There are reports of a male child as young as 12 being held, and there was a separate women's section on the second floor of the building for a time.  The jail was closed in 1992 after which is stood empty, being used only for storage until October of 2007 when it opened it's doors as a museum.
